Superb pair of English Art Deco glazed terracotta urns on pedestals by the Leeds Fireclay Company c.1930. Suitable for either internal or external use, either side of a staircase or terrace perhaps. 17″ diameter urn planters (with drainage in the base) with a stylized leaf pattern to the sides. Raised on broad moulded pedestals (height 29″) and sold together with two short lengths of matching balustrade. All fininshed in a buff coloured glaze.
Urn and pedestals are in very good condition with only a few minor chips, likewise the caps and plinths of the balustrade. Unfortunely several of the balusters (though complete) have been broken.
The Leeds Fireclay Company was established in 1889 as a merger of various manufacturers in the Leeds area including the celebrated makers Burmantoffs. Their glazed tiles and arcitectural elements were designed to be very hard wearing and could be scrubbed clean of the grime of Britain’s industrial cities. They were used on numerous important buildings across the coutry including London’s famous Art Deco gem the Michelin building.
