William Farnhill
Rotherham, 1825
Silver pair cases, 71 mm
Verge escapement
A very rare, huge silver pair cased verge.
MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with nicely engraved and pierced balance cock, and engraved plate. Steel Boseley type regulator and blued screws. Four round pillars.
Signed and numbered (40094).
A stop lever on the side of the inner case at 4 stops and restarts the movement.
The movement is in good condition and is running well.
DIAL : White enamel dial in reasonable condition.
There is some damage around the centre of the seconds subsidiary dial, and three light hairlines from the edge at 12, 6 and 8.
Blued steel hands.
INNER CASE : Silver, with clear hallmarks for London, 1826 maker’s mark IMH.
Very good condition throughout. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut. The high dome crystal is also in fine condition.
OUTER CASE : Silver pair case with matching hallmarks to the inner.
Again in very good condition. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut nicely.
The watch weighs a total of 330 gms. It is by far the largest silver pair cased watch of this period that we have seen.
The first photo above shows the watch next to a normal sized pair cased watch.
