Outstanding Quality Chinese Carved Buffalo & Boy
An Outstanding Quality, Large Chinese Hardwood Carving of a Boy and Buffalo
This charming and impressive hardwood carving is one of the very best of its kind that you will find and is significantly advanced / better than any other I've seen.
The large recumbent beast, brilliantly and naturalistically rendered and employing a number of carving techniques and a joyful boy clambering upon its back.
The patina is just wonderful. Overall it is very dark, as shown, but with burnished highlights and the warm 'burnt caramel' hue of the wood breaking through in places......gives this impression that, from a distance, this could be from bronze and not wood. The polished hooves, 'dissected' tail and chip-carved whorls which describe the flowing hair of the animal are superb.
Mounted on to a carved hardwood stand / plinth, of similar fine quality, designed as a rocky outcrop with gnarled pine tree boughs.
Dating to around the early 20th century this is a wonderful quality, decorative object and on a large scale which brings real presence.
Not to be missed.
Dimensions -
Overall, including the plinth, approx 35 cms wide x 22 cms tall
Condition -
There is one small old, neat repair to the tip of one horn. This is barely noticeable and is completely inconsequential to how the piece displays. There are some normal age-related stress hairlines and cracks about the body - please zoom in, they can be seen, but are very typical for wooden ware of this type and age. Overall, the piece displays brilliantly and is a joy to look at. Please request further images prior to purchase, we have 30 images on file. Email or call for any further information on this item. We give great attention to each and every item we select and offer for sale, priding ourselves on the accuracy of our descriptions and research. We are very happy to provide complete and exacting condition reports (together with further photographs, where necessary) and encourage buyers to request this information prior to purchase.
Accepted payment methods are via paypal, bank transfer, personal cheque or cash.
Viewing of any item in person, prior to purchase, is always welcomed by appointment.
