Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Victorian landscape oil painting of an angling scene by Paul H. Ellis, on canvass, circa 1890, in a fine quality gilt frame, in excellent condition. The painting depicts an elderly gentleman restfully contemplating life, sitting on a chair on his boat. He rests his rod, with his line in the water and a red float bobbing, whilst his intense Jack Russell dog waits to pounce at the first sign of a bite. So typical of this breed of dog. The artist skilfully shows the reflected trees and farmstead on the other side of the bank. It’s a hazy day probably around midday with little sign of sun, excellent for fishing.
Behind the boat we see coppice tree stumps and reeds in the foreground. This is a well-balanced painting that displays a peaceful and nostalgic scene of a bygone era and it’s a study one would not tire of viewing.
The Victorian oil picture is framed in a fine quality ornate gilt frame, which is excellent condition. The frame is inscribed “The Angler’s Assistant – Paul H Ellis” and the painting is also signed “Paul H Ellis” in the bottom left-hand corner.
The angling scene would look superb in a variety of rooms, including the hallway, living room or bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is an attractive and colourful piece. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely picture.

Condition Report:
This is a fine quality antique English Victorian landscape oil painting of an angling scene by Paul H. Ellis, on canvass, circa 1890, in a fine quality gilt frame, in excellent condition. The canvas is in excellent condition – the picture display both mellow and vibrant colours, which gives a tranquil effect. The picture has been sympathetically cleaned. In our opinion the canvas has been re-backed onto a stronger one retaining the original wooden mount. The carved gilt frame is of top quality and is probably a later replacement, done some years ago. The frame was often replaced when the original had lost some of its mouldings (we see this on many quality pictures - this does not devalue the item but enhances it). Nominal old age marks and wear to the leading edges of the gilt frame, but nothing significant, considering the age of the item. The back of the frame incorporates new brown paper tape and a new hanging string. This Victorian English oil painting is ready to hang.
