Newspaper Sign News of the World advertising sign
A rare enamelled advertising sign for the News of the World Sunday newspaper, these were generally produced in the blue and white colours however this beautiful example is in the black and white colours. This superb sign is from a private collection and is showing some signs of wear. Please see the images for the condition of the enamel work as with the majority of signs there is always some wear to them. An enamel sign is a sign made using vitreous enamel. These were commonly used for advertising and street signage in the period 1880 to 1950. Benjamin Baugh created the first purpose-built factory for making such signs in Selly Oak in 1889 — the Patent Enamel Company and with a number of other factories throughout the UK.
