This is an Arts & Crafts Cotswold School solid Ash No 10 Rocking chair made by Neville Neal of Warwickshire. It is stamped to the leg. Please google Neville or Lawrence Neal, the webiste is easy enough to find.
HIstory
An Arts and Crafts rocking chair originally designed by Ernest Gimson and made by Neville Neal. These were originally made by Edward Gardiner and Philip Clissett. Ernest Gimson revived this ancient village craft, making ash and oak chairs with rush seats to the true traditions of The Arts and Crafts Movement. Philip Clissett was a very skilled chair maker working at Bosbury in Herefordshire since 1838 and Gimson took lessons from him in 1890. Gimson's workshops were at Daneway in Gloucestershire and he inspired and taught Edward Gardiner this old art of chair making. Edward Gardiner later moved to Warwickshire where he worked until he died in 1958.
