MSJ&A
Manchester South Junction & Altrincham Railway
Carriage Door Lock
Kayes Patent
No. 17210
Maker: Kayes, Leeds
Brass
Push the handle in the direction of the arrow and the door catch opens.
Approximate dimensions: 11cm x 119.4cm excluding the part which fixes it to the door, weight 1.72 kilogram.
The Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway (MSJ&AR) was a suburban railway which operated an 8+1⁄2-mile (14 km) route between Altrincham in Cheshire and Manchester London Road railway station (now Piccadilly). It opened in 1849. In the mid-19th century, the MSJ&AR passed to joint ownership by the London and North Western Railway (L&NWR) and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR). The MSJ&AR owned its own coaches, but the haulage was provided by locomotives belonging to both the L&NWR and MS&LR companies. Joseph Kaye & sons were formed in 1855. I suspect this lock was designed shortly after.
There are surface marks associated with normal use and age.
A heavy and sturdy lock.
