Monumental RARE Antique Lantern Lamp By G.Polkey
Offered here is a monumental and rare lamp or 'hanging lantern' by the historic and highly regarded, George Polkey of Birmingham.
Having sold several beautiful vintage lamps over the years (Tilley, Aladdin, Revo etc) I have to say that this lamp is, by some considerable margin, the best I have had.
A very rare find indeed......this lamp is now 115 years old and still bears the original makers label and is marked: ' G.POLKEY, C&M 1901, BIRMINGHAM'.
This lamp would have originally been put into use either illuminating a railway station / platform, or, within a carriage itself. Unusually it bears the WD (War Department) mark together with the crows foot. So it could be that this lamp had a military application of some kind.
Constructed from glass, brass, copper and steel, the design is both splendid and imposing.
The huge reeded glass bell locates into a heavy brass ring which adjoins a pierced steel gallery with circular hinged lid. The copper cowling or chimney is further hinged, over which a shaped, heavy steel swing handle sits.
The overall height of this lantern is a goliath 55cms and, as shown in the photo, it dwarfs a champagne bottle (added to give some sense of this impressive scale).
A spectacular and 'one off' acquisition for the home, this super lamp - now fully converted to electricity - would make a terrific statement in a vaulted porch or entrance hall.......or....it could be admired up close and simply placed on a table, desk or positioned in an alcove.
This lantern has had a well considered, careful and professional conversion to electricity.
I have taken two shots of the inside so you are able to see what has been done. (Email me for further pictures).
Ready to go straight into service, it has been freshly rewired, with good quality rubber flex and has been fully PAT tested by a qualified electrician and bears the green pass label.
Email or call for any further information on this item. We give great attention to each and every item we select and offer for sale, priding ourselves on the accuracy of our descriptions and research.
