This is an early example of the exported chess sets carved by the Makonde (Mozambique/ Tanzania), based on the traditional Chidiu (bottle stopper) the pieces are carved with traditional figures, tribesmen for the pawns (scarified faces indicating earlier set) grain store for the castle, Giraffe for the knight (horses are unknown to the Makonde as the horse can't survive in this part of Africa due to the effect of tsetse flies) the bishop has a traditional form of mitre , the queen has the traditional water jar as her crown and the king sports a traditional very tall hat usual for a tribal chief.

The pieces are carved from native African blackwood (mpingo) (black pieces) and a type of rosewood for the white.

Albeit a 60 something year old set the condition is very good, there are no losses and only one piece has a slight crack in the body where the grain has eased.
