Mid 19th Century Curl mahogany Stick Barometer (Lo
A London made mahogany stick barometer by an eminent maker. It has an arch top a figured curl mahogany trunk and a shaped base with a turned cistern cover. The engraved scales show the atmospheric pressure in inches of mercury and the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and centigrade and has a turned bone index adjustment knob. It is signed by the maker, J. Newman of 122 Regent Street, London.
John Frederick Newman worked in Regent Street 1827-1862.. He made standard hand portable barometers for The Ross Antarctic expedition and his equipment was installed all over the British Empire. He invented several devices, exhibited at the Great Exhibition and was "without doubt, the leading scientific barometer maker of his day". A testament to this was that his business was taken over by Negretti and Zambra in 1862.
