Mercury Wheel Barometer by Giuseppe Croce c.1825
This is a really fine English antique barometer, made in York by the Italian instrument maker Giuseppe Croce. It would date to about 1825.
The case is an excellent example of quality cabinet work of the period. Carefully chosen figured georgian mahogany veneer has been used, and the outline of the case has been nicely defined with fine lines of boxwood and ebony stringing. It has a swan neck pediment and brass pineapple finial.
The arched cased thermometer is removable from it's housing and is secured by the original brass catch below.
The circular steel dial and the thermometer scale are both beautifully hand engraved and the dial bears the makers name of G Croce, York.
The glass column is sound and has a complete column of mercury. The pulley, silks and weight are all present undamaged and in fully working order. Shown in the 'corked' position.
In all respects this is a fine quality instrument in excellent order.
Dimensions: 38" high. 10" wide. The dial is 8" diameter.
Giuseppe Croce was a renown scientific instrument maker in York, working between 1820 and 1855. AUTUMN SALE
