This is an attractive and decorative mid 19th map of the ISLANDS IN THE ATLANTIC drawn and engraved by John Rapkin for "The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World" published by Tallis & Co in 1851.

It shows the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores, Bermuda and Cape de Verde Islands, illustrated with vignette engravings of the Fayal, Azores Pico, Azores Chapel in the Rock, St Vincente, Cape de Verde Islands Villa Franca, Azores Funchal, Madeira and Tenerife, Canary Islands.

The original outline hand-colouring has been augmented with additional later hand-colouring of the vignettes and border which has enhanced the decorative appeal of this attractive map.

This map is from the preferred edition without the central fold and was printed on heavy grade paper, blank verso and unfolded.

It is mounted within a cream mount card, protected in cellophane and is ready for framing or for giving as a gift.

Condition: Good condition and mounted ready to be framed. Two foxing spots are present: a faint one centre left and a deeper coloured one on Africa, but these do little to detract from this fine map.
