Mahogany Barometer with a Translucent Glass Face
A very unusual late Victorian mahogany cased mercury wheel barometer, having a translucent glass 12″ dial and glass thermometer scale. The case has been skeletonised, leaving large voids for the dial and thermometer which are then backed with clear glass to protect the moving parts. These voids allow light to pass through from behind, illuminating the dials. This barometer would make a statement, especially if mounted on a glass wall allowing light to flood through.
The larger than average mahogany case has elegant scrolling lines, edged with a well-carved moulding and well-figured flame veneers to the front.
The wooden hand-set key in the centre of the base operates the second brass hand, allowing for daily comparison of the atmospheric pressure.
The glass dials are sandblasted and the barometer face is indistinctly signed W. HINTONS, PATENT, LONDON, NO. 15.
The barometer has a cast brass bezel fitted with flat bevelled glass.
Housed in the trunk, and with a clear glass back, is the mercury thermometer in a shaped mahogany box, with a translucent plate marked in degrees Fahrenheit.
