This is an intricately inlaid Tunbridge ware work box from circa 1870. On the central lid is a tumbling block design with a range of specimen woods ranging from ebony to rosewood to walnut to boxwood. This design is then continued around the outside of the box. There is a mosaic motif that frames the tumbling block designs on both the lid and the sides of the box.

The interior is original with the original paper and pink silk taffeta fabric. The pink silk taffeta lines the inside of the lid with ribbon criss-crossing the top to store keepsakes and letters. There is an inset tray also lined with the original paper. There is some wear on the paper with a light stain in the central compartment. At the bottom, the wood has dried and there are two cracks, both of which have been repaired.

Over the life of this box, it has been very well cared for. When this box came in, it was in excellent condition. None of the veneer was missing and only one repair to the rosewood lining inside the lid was visible.

This is a large and lovely work box.
