This is a pair of finely carved Black Forest deer in almost perfect condition from the 19th Century. They are quite large at just under 14" in height. The detailing on the faces, hair, legs etc. is a masterclass in the art of carving. The wood is probably Linden wood (Lime) which was the preferred choice of the Swiss carver due to its lack of grain and low density.

The deer are shown standing on rocks and though they were clearly carved as a pair there are subtle differences which give each deer its own character.

Dimensions: 35cm height x 20cm width

Condition: Overall, the condition of these deer is excellent. One of the ears on one of the deer shows signs of having been glued and there are a few fine shrinkage cracks here and there but none of any consequence.
