Large Pair of 16thC Style Cast Stone Seated Dogs 16thC dogs medieval dogs stone dogs %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
The large and imposing pair of cast stone opposing dogs or hounds, of unusual form and copied from a medieval design, each with open mouths and lolling tongues, their expressions somewhat crazed, with large collars and looped chains, seated alert, and surviving from the middle to later part of the twentieth century.

The hounds are heavy and have weathering commensurate with being outside there are historic repairs to each with both having been damaged at some stage in their lives. They remain very stable and have an abundance of character.

Not a design we have ever come across before, they have a naïve quality and are perhaps unique, making a refreshing change from the usual examples of pointers or whippets for instance. They appear to have been copied from a 16th century design.

This pair make for an entrance one certainly wouldn’t forget.
