Large Japanese carved bear growling, circa 1930s
This is a superbly carved wooden Japanese bear shown prowling on all four legs while growling, circa 1930s. It has lovely colour and patina with areas of wear highlighted by their lighter tone. The carver has captured the delicate beauty of an actual bear's coat of fur. The bear is posed in such a way that it oozes character and charm, and because of its relatively large size can be displayed on the floor as well as on a table top.
The bear has been carved from a single piece of timber, probably cedar which was the preferred material for the Hokkaido-based carvers.
In our opinion this is one the best bears in a collection of 12 that we have acquired recently from the same source. It is also likely to be the oldest.
Dimensions:
Width 46 cm
Depth 28 cm
Height 33cm
Weight: 5.3 kg
The last picture shows it compared to a standard size soft drinks can (330ml).
Condition: Excellent condition with areas of wear to the surface adding to its charm.
Postage & packing: £15 within the UK. Please contact me for a quote to an overseas destination.
The Japanese have a strong tradition of wood carving but the heritage of bear sculptures dates back to 1922, when Yoshichika Tokugawa, a feudal lord, brought folk crafts back from his trip to Switzerland, and used them as models to promote woodcarving as a side business for the farmers on the island of Hokkaido. In 1924, the first Hokkaido-made bear woodcarving was created by a dairy farmer, modeled after this Swiss folk craft. In time, a craft industry developed producing high quality carvings of bears in different poses which were sold to tourists and collectors from around the world. Though the craft is in decline due to the time required to carve one of these bears its history is celebrated in a dedicated museum in Yakumo, Hokkaido containing over 300 bear carvings including the first ever carving and a magnificent bear presented to the Emperor of Japan.
