Large Capodimonte - style porcelain jewellery box
This is a stunningly beautiful Capodimonte-style porcelain jewellery box dating from the mid 19th Century. All four sides and top depict mythical scenes of revelry which are relief moulded and finely painted. The scene on the lid is surrounded by a border of gilded scrolls while the sides are decorated with winged putti holding garlands of flowers and, rather gruesomely, decapitated heads. The scenes on the sides of the base have a simple solid gilded border in contrast to the more elaborate border on top.
The base and lid have bronze mounts and the lid fits snugly on top of the base.
There is a faint maker's mark in blue on the base.
Dimensions: 24cm wide x 18cm deep x 17.5cm high
Weight: 4.53kg. This is a heavy object.
Condition: Overall, the box is in very good condition with no damage to the paintwork or moulded scenes. The gilding on the lid is a little rubbed. There are two small nibbles on the bottom edge: one on the front left of centre, the other on the right side at front edge (see last photo), but neither are noticeable or detract from this wonderful box. The cement adhesive used to mount the bronze fitting to the base appears to have been renewed in more recent years.
The quality of the painting lifts this box well above the ordinary. Please contact us if you would like to see additional photographs.
Postage and Packing: Within the UK is £15. Please contact us for a quote for overseas destinations.
