John Shirley Fox Attrib.1867-1939 Pastel Harbour
We are offering this rather dramatic pastel, which we are attributing to the well known English artist John Shirley-Fox. The pastel depicts a harbour scene with some gaff-rigged fishing boats to the right and a small boat with a funnel just outside the harbour entrance. A square church tower stands silhouetted against the dramatic sky, with the sun's rays radiating out from behind some heavy clouds. The town appears to be built on a hill sloping down to the harbour and may well be in Scotland, as he was known to paint landscapes there.
The reason that we are attributing this work to John Shirley Fox is because it was purchased with the two other pastels of his, ( one of which, a flower piece, we have already listed), both of which were signed and had been framed by the same framers, Chapman Bros. (Chelsea) Ltd. 241 King's Road, Chelsea, and the artist had his studio in Chelsea.
JOHN SHIRLEY FOX RBA, 1867-1939, studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Gerome and Bouguereau and exhibited at the Paris Salon from age 16 and at the Royal Academy from 1890. He was the son of the Paris Correspondent of The Times Mr. Richard Parsonage Fox, which is why his son's art education was exclusively in Paris. He was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1892. He was principally a portrait painter and according to his obituary, painted some 350 portraits, predominantly of notable people, but also painted some Scottish landscapes.
He was living in London in 1890, but later lived in Marlborough, but after 1925, in Bath, keeping an apartment in London. He was married to Ada R. Holland, a portrait and figure painter, who was also a listed artist and frequent exhibitor. They had no children. His pastimes were numismatics and dry fly fishing in the chalk streams of England and he wrote two books, one about fishing and one about his experiences as an art student in Paris. He died at 16 Brock Street, Bath on Saturday, 10th June, 1939, after suffering from ill health for some while.
His biographical details may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club) and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters.
He exhibited 15 paintings at the Royal Academy, 49 at the RBA, 2 at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, 1 at the Royal Oil Painters Institure, 4 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and variously in the provinces.
Bath and North East Somerset Council own a 3/4 portrait of King George V by John Shirley Fox, which is viewable on google, as well as several other examples of his portraiture. One of his paintings is in the Royal Collection. Auction listings are available at the usual sites and the record for one of his portraits is over £10,000.
The painting is newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard and has been reframed in a 3.5cm, 1 3/8" silver gilt frame which tones with it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
