JESSON, BIRKETT & CO Silver & Copper Jewellery Box
JESSON, BIRKETT & CO. Antique Arts and Crafts Silver & Copper Jewellery Box / Casket c. 1905 17.5cm wide
A beautiful & extremely rare silver and planished copper antique jewellery box or casket by Jesson, Birkett & Co. showing fine pierced trellis silver work overlaid on planished copper to a design by Anne Grisdale Stubbs. Jesson, Birkett & Co. Ltd was located in the Highgate area of Birmingham where AE Jones from the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft utilised the staff, designs and processes from the workshops for his own ventures. Jesson, Birkett & Co Ltd later merged with A.E. Jones Ltd around 1905.
The copper is finely patinated with Jesson, Birkett & Co.'s own colouring process and is decorated on all sides with beautiful hand hammered floral design motifs - we have not seen these previously on other examples of this metalwork which are shown additionally for reference from Jesson, Birkett & Co.'s original trade catalogue.
The jewellery box/casket retains its original silk lining and is clearly stamped to the base with the Jesson, Birkett & Co. monogram.
Date: Circa 1905.
