A very interesting Italian carved boxwood roundel depicting two young boys, almost cherubs, probably representative of either Gemini or one of the famous twins of antiquity eg Castor and Pollux or Romulus and Remus. The quality of the carving is quite simply stunning with the boys almost standing proud of the wood they are so deeply carved, and it has a lovely soft colour and patina to it. The roundel is mounted in a Georgian gilt circular frame with a later ebonised mount. A fine and unsual item with lots of decorative appeal. C.1850.
