Huge Mahogany Haberdashery Island Bookcase Display
This is magnificent. It came from Gieves and Hawkes's shop in Chester. As you probably know, Gieves and Hawkes are the premier Savile Row tailors. Their shops are furnished like Gentleman's clubs with lots of polished mahogany and big period lamps. I love their old world elegance. This huge island was the centrepiece of the Chester branch and sat in their shop for thirty odd years. They used it to house folded shirts etc.
The island is beautiful. It has a solid black painted top. There are two lamps built in. These are made in solid turned mahogany like classical columns. (They will need to be rewired.) The island stands on a plinth base with solid mahogany column supports. The base is shelved, the shelves with reeded edges. Have you seen anything of this quality before.
The island is in good condition. Odd bruise and scratch as you would expect. There is some edging missing on one end at top- see photograph.
This is a fearsomely heavy piece. It took six of us to drag it. It is movable if you have piano wheels. The lamps and top come off and I would imagine the whole things can be unscrewed and flatpacked but this would be a big task. It is such a heavy piece I think the purchaser will need to commission a specialist mover - a piano mover could do it easily or you will need to hire your own van. I can load it my end.
This is such a beautiful thing. It has a library look about it and would look wonderful in a home Library. It lends itself to being converted in to a most impressive chairman's desk or it could go in a huge kitchen or if you could take it apart, what a thing to have upstairs in a large dressing room. It could also be used in an upmarket Gentleman's outfitters!
I have other things from Gieves and Hawkes so do check my listings. Phone me to discuss the piece.
The island is 120 inches long and 47 inches deep and stands 34 inches high.
