Gold & gilt pair cases - William Adiss, c1750
This early London repeater, in its original gold inner case, but later gilt outer, has been converted from a verge to lever movement, probably during the early 19th century.
MOVEMENT Gilt quarter repeating movement, lever conversion. Signed and numbered (2071). Finely engraved and pierced balance cock and plate, with very large diamond endstone. Five round pillars. The movement is protected by a gilt dustcap, signed and numbered as the movement.
Running well and repeating correctly. All complete except for the small vibrating pulse piece lever.
DIAL Original white enamel in wonderful condition. A few small scratches around the edges but very fine, and a classic mid 18th century English dial. Gold beetle and poker hands (the minute is a repaired replacement).
INNER CASE Gold but with no hallmarks. Beautifully pierced and engraved. Generally in good condition with no dents, scratches or repairs, with just a little compression around the band. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bull's eye crystal is fine .
OUTER CASE Gilt brass. The catch and hinge are good and the case snaps shut nicely. Much of the gilding, especially on the back has worn through to the brass, though the case is otherwise undamaged.
This outer case is a little later than the watch and is not original. However it is a perfect fit.
William Addis is listed in London between 1745 and 1785.
