Gold & enamel, verge - Wakelin & Taylor, c1790
A very stylish watch, with a fine English verge movement, in a gold case decorated with orange enamel and split pearl borders.
MOVEMENT Excellent verge movement, fully signed and numbered (762). Diamond endstone and blued screws. All in fine original condition and running well.
DIAL Solid gold dial, with engine turned engraving. Hallmarked for 18 carat gold on the reverse (see photo). Excellent condition. Nice blued steel serpentine hands. The minute hand is a later replacement, but a good match.
CASE 18ct gold. No hallmarks but tested as 18 carat solid gold. The gold is in very good condition and hinges and catches are fine. No repairs.
The pearl borders, back and front, are complete, with no damage to the pearls. The blue and white enamel rims on the front bezel have a little damage at 12 and 9.
The enamel rims on the back have a little damage at 3 and 7. The orange enamel to the centre of the back is perfect.
John Wakelin and William Taylor were fine gold and silversmiths in London in the late 18th century. They were succeeded by Robert Garrard in 1802 and this company was a predecessor of the current Garrard & Co. Ltd.
