Gnomeman Adzed Oak Dining Suite Table & 6 Chairs
This is a superb quality oak dining suite made by Thomas “Gnomeman” Whittaker during the mid 20th century with a good antique golden colour and a very nice patina. The suite comprises a solid oak, beautifully hand adzed 6’ refectory table with lyre shaped ends and a central stretcher and a carver chair with five dining chairs all upholstered with 1/8” thick studded tan hide seats. Each piece having the hand carved gnome signature.
The table measures 74 cms high 78 cms by wide by 185 cms long.
The carver chair is 90 cms high 60 cms wide 48 cms deep and the chairs are 90 cms high 40 cms wide 40 cms deep.
The seats are 46 cms from the floor.
Thomas Whittaker trained in York and lived and worked in Littlebeck North Yorkshire, near Whitby. The trademark gnome he carved into his antique furniture was inspired by a German Jewish Refugee he met after the war who was a judge at the North of England Craftsmens Exhibition in Newcastle. When asked to give the piece of furniture he had entered some identity the judge suggested a gnome, being the German Oak Spirit, legend being that a gnome is born every time an acorn germinates to guard the tree throughout its life.
Tom Whittaker was born in 1910 and died in 1991. His work remains highly collected and is held in high regard.
