Glass & Coromandel Games Compendium / Box c.1880
An exceptional glazed Coromandel games box, my favourite kind retaining the original bevelled glass panels to the top and front. The box retains both the original engraved inlaid brass plaque and the original instruction book "The Royal Cabinet of Games".
The book explains the various games, Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Ascot / Steeplechase, Cribbage, Dominoes etc. It also advertises a variety of other boxes offered by this company and sports the Royal Warrant "By Appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales", this would have been Albert Edward, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
The Chess set and Backgammon counters are all made from bone, natural and red stained. The chessmen all sit on little pins to keep them in place.
The leather covered folding board (minor wear) can be used for Chess/Checkers, Backgammon and Ascot.
This box would have been a top-notch example in it's day for a wealthy family. Excellent condition dating to the late Victorian age, c.1880.
13 3/4" x 9 1/2" x 7 1/2".
