Late 1700’s to very early 1800’s single section Partridge wood tea caddy in very good condition. Very distinctive grain, the wood appropriately often referred to as ‘beef wood’ in some countries. The wood generally was only used as the ‘main’ veneer on boxes from the late 1700’s through to the Regency period. All veneer and all of the contrasting edge trim is original and complete, relatively rare to come across in particular relating to the edge trim. Brass top handle. Lid closes perfectly square. Hinges and lock in very good condition. The edging to the interior carcass features light wood to the base and dark wood to the lid….a common feature on boxes of the period. Key for decorative purposes only. The box has been neatly relined throughout. A ‘classic’ style caddy that shouts Georgian and the use of Partridge-wood making it a particularly welcomed addition to any collection.
