Description:
This is a fine quality antique English early 18th century solid oak carved triple panel coffer, circa 1700 – 1730, boasting stunning carved detail with a rich colour, in excellent condition. The coffer is constructed with a moulded three panel top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints to the corners, secured by peg construction. The lid opens using iron strap hinges, which we believe to be old replacement hinges of approximately 19th Century age, to reveal a spacious interior. The interior is clean, dry, practical & usable, retaining its original floor-boards. The coffer incorporates a working lock and comes with a key, with an old replacement steel clasp (possibly the same age as the hinges). The front of the coffer is profusely decorated with the original arabesque carved rail, below which are three inset carved panels, comprising a central diamond carved panel with foliate carved surround and foliate cross centre, flanked by arch carved panels, which boast further arabesque carvings to the arches, as well as vertical ing to their centres. The carved panels are also divided by foliate carved vertical rails. Below, the coffer displays a foliate scroll carved bottom rail. The carvings to the panels and rails of this coffer are all finished with punchwork backgrounds. Altogether, this coffer displays a rich array of fine carvings. The sides of the coffer also feature inset panels. The coffer stands on the original scribe carved stiles (feet). The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor. Overall, this coffer boasts a stunning rich dark colour and patination and is an ideal interior design piece.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottoman at the foot of the bed.
This beautiful piece boasts a rich dark red-and-brown oxblood colour. As it boasts the original wax polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
Condition Report:
This 18th century carved oak coffer is in excellent clean condition, considering its age. The coffer has been wax-polished, to a professional standard in our workshop. Nominal old marks to the top (see photos) and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The coffer incorporates a working lock with key, with an old replacement steel clasp and iron strap hinges to the lid (possibly 19th Century in age). The coffer stands on short stiles (feet) and the carvings to the front rail, panels & stiles are all original (not later Victorian additions). The coffer is solid in joint it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in excellent condition. It is rare to find a coffer of this period in such clean condition.
