Georgian mahogany Candle box
This is a particularly handsome example of a Georgian mahogany candle box.
The craftsman who made it took care to choose a selection of quality woods, and has shown them off to very good effect.
The front, top and sides are made from well figured flame mahogany, and the edges of the front have been cut back to accept a border of boxwood stringing and cross grained mahogany veneer to accentuate the shape and catch the eye.
The back is made of a single piece of straight grain oak and has a pretty fret sawn design to the top.
The original hinges have had to be replaced at some time previously, but the box is in excellent condition with great colour and a deep patina.
Dimensions: 18 inches high, 8.5 inches wide, 5.5 inches deep
Candle boxes were usually rural or provincial home accessories, used in cottages or country houses. They come in all shapes and sizes, and although they have a basic purpose they were often carefully made and embellished to be a feature of the home decor. Candles were a valuable and important commodity and these boxes would have been placed in a prominent position such as near the hearth. AUTUMN SALE
