Georgian Cut Crystal Sweetmeat Pedestal Glass
This we date to approximately 1820, it is a rare example, as well as being not only beautiful but the cut is extraordinary. The cutters have gone to another level on this piece, the most striking aspect being the cut to the underside of the foot. Not only is the foot an octagonal floral petal lobed foot and beautifully stepped and tapered with facet panels on the upper surface, but the underside has also been deep cut in a hobnail and cross hatch design, with each petal edge having a foot/leg fashioned from cleverly cutting the individual hobnail to leave an angular raised leg.
The bowl of the body has a band of strawberry diamonds, prismatic cutting, with alternating pillar cutting, strawberry diamonds and fine relief diamonds below a band of panel cutting. The flaring rim which is petal shaped and fan cut has 14 petals. The foot which is taper step cut to the top and faceted to match the hexagonal stem is petal and lobed in shape, the faceted stem is punctuated with a band knop that has been diagonally cut.
This sweetmeat glass dates from around 1820, late Georgian period, and is made of hand-blown lead crystal glass, it is unmarked as is the majority of antique glassware but from the design detail and comparison with other period items this is most likely it to be Anglo-Irish, and possibly from Waterford, the quality, weight, cut, design all add up to being from this source.
Condition: we have been over this with a toothcomb there is one tiny fault to report, one end of foot petal has lost its leg, appear to have been knocked off it the depths of history and that has left a flaked loss to the lower edge of the end of the lobed petal. It is really tiny, and for an item this profuse and delicate in its cut it is quite remarkable that this is the one tiny fault.
Size: 4 1/2 inches overall diameter and 3 3/4 inches high. Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
We welcome purchases from all over the world, however, we do not take any responsibility or pay for import charges and taxes that non UK purchasers may accrue.
