Gents silver Art Deco Stauffer Andreas Huber watch
A 1920s/30s silver Art Deco Stauffer wrist watch retailed by Andreas Huber.
In 1856, Andreas Huber received a legacy of 3000 florins and he bought a watch shop in Munich. His wife Xaviera also worked in the business and built up valuable relationships with the upper classes and nobility, including the Bavarian royal family. King Ludwig II ordered precious ceremonial watches from them and in 1912 the title Hofuhrenfabrik (official watch factory to the court) was given by the Bavarian prince regent.
The company subsequently passed into the hands of Joseph Huber who developed the company even further, including supplying watches to the army.
In 1920, the company was passed onto Andreas Hubert II. He had a completely different plan for the company and really appreciated the arts so he established contacts with artists, writers and musicians. A further three stores were opened in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Nuremberg. The company also went on to specialise in stop watches and measuring instruments for motor racing, and also expedition instruments. In 1936 Huber received the order to carry out the timekeeping at the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Despite suffering severe damage and loss during World War II, the family continued to trade and build up the business again, and they still trade today with three branches in the centre of Munich.
This particular watch has a hand-winding movement, signed with the Stauffer logo, and it is working nicely.
The watch itself is a very wearable size at 25mm wide excluding the winding crown and 39mm high excluding the fixed wire lugs. The case is silver and there Swiss and German silver marks for 935 silver within the hinged case back.
The watch has a curved lens there are a couple of 5mm scratches if you look closely but really not too obvious to the naked eye.
The dial has fabulous Art Deco style with really exaggerated stylised numbers, it is very unusual to see a watch that is so Art Deco in design, and it is an excellent example from the period. The dial is signed Andreas Huber although the writing is a little worn. Blued steel Breguet style hands.
A later green leather strap has been fitted.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
