Gents Certina DS automatic wrist watch, circa 1960
Gents Certina DS automatic wrist watch, circa 1960.
The watch has a hand-winding movement, calibre 25-36, which is working nicely. This is a good quality 17-jewel movement which is fully signed with the Certina name.
The watch measures 35mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case is stainless steel and it is in good condition with just minor surface marks, nothing serious at all. The inside of the screw-on case back is signed with the Certina name.
The lens is in good condition.
The dial is signed Certina DS. DS stands for Double Security, a system introduced by Certina in the late 1950s for a more robust watch. The first DS models were introduced to the market in 1959 and they had dauphine hands such as this one. Later post 1960 models had the turtle case back but this particular watch has the flat back which confirms it is one of the earlier examples.
The dial on this particular watch is in its original finish with original hands, centre seconds and outer minute markers. There is some marking to the dial and some discolouration as shown in the photos.
A new leather strap has been fitted.
