Gents Antique Silver Trench Watch, 1915
Gents antique silver trench watch, 1915.
The watch has a Swiss hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement has been identified as being manufactured by the General Watch Company.
The watch measures 35mm diameter excluding the fixed wire lugs and the winding crown. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case back for London (import mark), 1915, with a sponsor’s mark for George Stockwell.
From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail.
There is also a Déposé No (registered design) 9846 which relates to the registration of a design for a watch with fixed wire lugs and a leather strap in 1903. This design was registered by Dimier Fréres & Co in 1903.
So, to sum up, Dimier Fréres & Co would have bought in the movement to be housed in a case of their design. The whole watch was then sent to the UK where it was assayed in readiness for onward wholesale.
The case is in good condition, especially for such an early piece, just a slight indentation to the screw-on case back, and the odd small mark but nothing too serious.
The front cover has a small lens surrounded by enamel filled numbers.
There is a small buttons between the bottom two lugs which pushes in to open the front cover. Inside, there is a glass lens which is in good condition.
The dial is in good condition. Over the years, the paint detail has been removed from the hands and numbers, probably because of the radium content.
A new leather strap has been fitted.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
