Gents 9ct Gold Wrist Watch, 1926
Gents 9ct gold wrist watch, 1926.
UK POSTAGE ONLY
The watch has a 17-jewel hand-winding movement, identified as being by the ebauche maker Fabrique d'Horlogerie de Fontainemelon, which is working nicely. Some of these movements have plain plates but this one has perlage detailing, a circular pattern which looks like pearls.
The watch measures 34mm diameter excluding the winding crown and lugs. The case is 9 carat gold and there are hallmarks inside the case back for London (import mark), 1926. There is a sponsor’s mark which is difficult to read but appears to be for Louis Weil who was listed in 1881 as a "watch manufacturer and importer". Louis Weil died in 1919 but the company may well have continued trading and using the registered mark. The case is in good condition for such an early piece, there is one small “ding” to the back and a little unevenness but nothing too serious at all.
Originally the case would have had wire lugs but these have been replaced with sturdier lugs over the years, and this work has been professionally and sympathetically carried out.
The case is in the Borgel style and we believe it to be by François Borgel however the FB key mark is not visible. This is sometimes seen when British hallmarks have been punched and then subsequently polished back, this is known as “rectification”.
The lens has a little light scratching but is acceptable.
The dial has a couple of short hairline cracks but they are faint. The paint does not appear to be radium based as the Geiger counter reading is at normal background levels. Pin set hands.
A later leather strap has been fitted.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
UK POSTAGE ONLY
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
