Gents 9ct gold Mappin Campaign wristwatch, 1950s.
A gents 9ct gold Mappin Campaign wristwatch, 1950s.
The original Mappin Campaign watches were worn by soldiers during the Boer War, and they proved themselves to be very reliable even in desert conditions in the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. Advertised as “Mappin’s Famed Campaign watch”, it was declared to be “absolutely dust and damp-proof” and fitted with a “luminous dial that shows the time on the blackest of nights”. The watch was put to the test in the most severe desert conditions possible, as Anglo-Egyptian troops, led by General Kitchener, turned the tide on the Mahdist War.
This particular example is a later model from the 1950s so it would seem Mappin revived the Campaign name. Coincidentally, they have also just released a limited edition Mappin Campaign watch which pays homage to the original from over 100 years ago.
This particular watch has a hand-winding movement, FHF 26, which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the Mappin name.
The watch itself measures 32mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case is 9 carat gold and there are hallmarks inside the case back for London 1956. The case is in good condition. The back of the watch has an inscription from when the watch was presented to E W Horsey MBE by the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation in 1957.
The Ashanti Goldfields Corporation is a gold mining company based in Ghana that was founded by Edwin Cade. The Ashanti Mine in Obuasi has been producing since 1897 and it is sited on one of the world's major gold deposits and is one of the ten largest in the world.
A new leather strap has been fitted to the watch and it will all be sent in a new presentation box.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
