Gents 9ct gold Atlas wrist watch by Stauffer
Gents 9ct gold Atlas wrist watch by Stauffer.
The watch has a jewelled hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the Atlas mark.
The name Atlas was registered by Stauffer in London in 1885 and in Switzerland in 1892. Atlas was the name of their factory in La Chaux de Fonds and watches produced there towards the end of the 19th Century were known as Atlas watches.
The Atlas name was then revived in the 1920s which is when this particular watch dates back to, being hallmarked inside the hinged case back for Glasgow 1928 together with the importer's mark for George Nicolet of Stauffer.
The three triangles within the Atlas logo refer to Stauffer’s third quality watches. Third quality watches were in fact their best top of the range watches (not the worst as we would think nowadays).
The watch measures 33mm diameter and the case is in good condition. The winding crown would have had gold capping on originally but this has worn off over the years.
The watch glass is in lovely condition.
The enamel dial has a couple of very faint hairline cracks, just about visible with a magnifying loupe. Blued steel Breguet style hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.
A new leather strap has been fitted.
The watch comes in a vintage presentation box from a Swiss jeweller. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
