Gents 1950s Elgin Shockmaster watch, box & papers

Gents 1950s Elgin Shockmaster wrist watch, box & papers.
The watch has an Elgin calibre 642 hand-winding movement which is working nicely. This is the 17-jewel model, it also came as a 15 jewel version. The 642 was first introduced in 1950 but this particular model is post 1955, the year when Elgin stopped using chronological serial numbers.
The watch measures 32mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the very handsome shaped lugs. The case is stainless steel and the front and sides are in lovely condition. The screw-on case back has some marking where a tool has slipped in the past. The case back mentions Durapower Mainspring, one of the first alloy mainsprings, invented in 1947. The case back also states that the watch is water resistant but, as with any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water and moisture.
The lens is in lovely condition.
The very handsome dial is in its original finish with segmented centre surrounded by concentric circles. Signed Elgin, together with the dp logo for Durapower. Original hands and subsidiary seconds dial.
A new leather strap has been fitted.
The watch comes with its original Elgin presentation box, original guarantee and original information booklet. The box has an old repair to the lid but this is only cosmetic.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
