French Straw Work Cotton Reel Box French straw Prisoner of War %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Unusual French Prisoner of War straw-work box for cotton reels. The sliding lid opens to reveal four divisions for the reels with bone edged eyelets at the side where the thread would be fed through. The top features a harbour scene and the sides all have a vertical striped pattern. It dates from around 1840, after the end of the wars with France. Many French prisoners of war remained in England and continued with the straw making further into the mid 19th century. Very good condition throughout. It measures just over 6 1/4" long. I prefer payment by bank transfer, details on request.
