This is a very unusual antique French wall plaque/medallion by Barbedienne.

The subject matter of the plaque is absolutely unique. It depicts a tree in its finest details with mountains in the background. The tree is growing on rocks and appears to be struck by lightning, but still standing tall and strong (a metaphor?).

The rocks bear the inscription 'LA SOUSCRIPTION DES PROMENEURS ET DES ARTISTES' with the date '1870'. I think the plaque may have been made to mark some kind of a special occasion to do with walkers and artists. It might well be a one-off piece.

Diameter just over 14 cm.

The medallion is clearly signed 'F. BARBEDIENNE' on the side.

A really fine and rare example by the famous French fondeur.
