French Art Nouveau Ceramic Planter
Dating to around 1900, this is a fully glazed French ceramic planter is the epitome of the European embracing Art nouveau and secessionist design. This is unmarked other than the mould number (8201) and a further number 4 mark, most likely the size. The curvaceous and organic form was seen from around 1880 to 1910 or thereabouts. It was repeated in ceramics, metal ware, art works and everyday furnishings and architectural embellishments. Sometimes referred to as Barbotine pottery, there were many factories and designers associated with this type of item, and in the absence of any factory mark we are reticent to attribute to any one specific. However this is a good example of the period and type of item.
It is in excellent condition , the usual glaze crazing is present, but light and hasn't been stained. It is a good size, suitable for a mantel (0verall 24 cm long, overall 11 cm wide and from base to top of handle 12 cm). The decoration is applied to a moulded body featuring a basket weave to the lower dark green panels, the olive green is all raised as is the flower and leaf emblem. The inside is a plain cream glaze. Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
We welcome purchases from all over the world, however, we do not take any responsibility or pay for import charges and taxes that non UK purchasers may accrue.
