I don’t know where this box has been kept but obviously it has had little to no use and handled very little. The quality of the amboyna veneer is superb to all aspects of the box. Unspoilt patina. Contrasting edge trim to the lid. The top features a brass cartouche within a highly ornate surround set within an amboyna panel with outer strip inlays and cross grain rosewood veneer. All veneer and inlays are original and complete. The lid closes perfectly square on a nigh box length strip hinge for nigh on maximum support. Sadly the key has long gone and the key shown is for decorative purposes only. Removable panel to the base section. Quite how many of the various accessories are original to the box I don’t know but I would hazard a guess that most are replacements or later additions. In reality the vast majority of sewing/work boxes are now put to modern day use as jewellery boxes. The condition of the velvet on the panel and the silk lining to the storage section beneath and to the lid interior is excellent with no tears and no stains. All of the thread covered buttons to the lid panel are original and complete and the octagonal bevelled edged mirror is void of any chips, fractures and loss of silver. Grand for use as a jewellery box or would be a delight to use for the purpose originally intended.
