Finn Juhl’s Japanese Sofa & Footstool (Model 137) Finn Juhl Japan sofa %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A completely original set designed in 1953 by the highly regarded Danish designer, Finn Juhl (1912-1989) and made by France and Son. This iconic and highly collectable 2-seater sofa (Model 137), with a matching footstool (Model 137F), known as the Japanese sofa and is said to have been inspired by the Torri gate or Miajima water gate off the coast of Itsukushima Island near Hiroshima which appears to float.
Covered in the original hand-sewn burnt orange, woven wool fabric, the sofa and footstool appear to float on solid teak frames whilst brass fittings connect the distinctively turned rail to the shaped sofa back.
Both pieces are in excellent condition considering their age and continue to be extremely elegant and stylish.
