Fine Georgian Stick Barometer, J&W Watkins,London.
A superb and rare Georgian sick barometer by renowned makers, Jremiah and Walter Watkins of London, c.1785.
The edge moulded case is made using Cuban mahogany figured veneers and timber of a lovely dark and rich colour. The architectural pediment sits above a large diameter adjustable hygrometer and silvered scale plate. The engraved silvered scale plate is fitted with a mercury thermometer and manual vernier guage with the maker' name, 'J&W Watkins, Charings Crofs, London' finely engraved as if on a scoll or banner. The exposed tube is fitted with a boxwood cistern concealed behind a most individual carved cistern cover with silver decoration. An unusual feature, which corresponds with the silver decoration to the cistern cover, is how all the brass parts of the barometer have been silvered, so all metal parts appear silver.
Jeremiah and Walter Watkins were the second generation of an important family of barometer makers which spanned over 100 years dating back to the 1740's. For more pictures and further information on the Watkins family please visit our main website or see 'English Barometer 1660-1860' Goodison(p.269-280)
Height 44".
