Fine Georgian Mahogany Stick Barometer by Dollond.
A fine quality Georgian mahogany stick barometer by the famous London makers, Dollond. The edge moulded case is veneered in the best quality flame mahogany veneers of particularly good colour, with a 'front to back' swan neck pediment above a lockable glazed door. The silvered register plates are fitted with a thermometer and manually operated vernier and are finely engraved and signed 'Dollond, London'. The concealed tube is fitted with a boxwood cistern and portable screw fitted behind a turned mahogany cistern cover.
The renowned family firm of barometer makers, Dollond, originated with Peter Dollond in 1750 who was appointed 'Optician and Instrument Maker to King George III', he took various members of his family into the business during the 18th century but it was his nephew George who continued the business upon Peter's death in 1820 with the business continuing on into the 20th century when it was taken over by the firm Aitchison, hence 'Dollond & Aitchison' the opticians. Most of the barometers made by the firm are just sign 'Dollond' rather than Peter or George etc, this barometer dates from a period, around 1800, when Peter and George were both active in the firm.
Height. 39". Unless otherwise stated all barometer prices include local delivery (50 miles). We deliver personally throughout the country, please contact us for prices excluding delivery or to discuss delivery further than 50 miles.
