English Oak Automated Cigar Box / Humidor - 1890
A wonderful Victorian cigar box or cabinet made from solid English Oak decorated with polished brass mounts, a winning combination to create a very handsome piece indeed.
The top has a central shield shaped cartouche with a matching one to the front. Either side is mounted with an attractive carrying handle.
These are always highly sought-after with their automated action once the box is unlocked (complete with working key) the drawer is opened which automatically opens the lid, when the drawer is shut, the lid closes.
The interior is fully fitted, lined in Cedar wood which is what kept cigars fresh this is not officially a Humidor as these are modern inventions to regulate the humidity within it is the Cedar lining that did this job well over 100 years ago.
The bottom drawer is fitted with nickel tray for cigar trimmings and beyond is a trough for matches and a strike.
The lid is impressed with an English design registration number of 143700 which allows us to date it accurately to the year 1890.
Superb condition, measuring 12 1/4" x 7 1/4" x 6 3/4" tall.
