Edwin Lord Weeks 1849-1903 Arab Street Watercolour
We are offering for sale this orientalist watercolour by the American artist EDWIN LORD WEEKS, who has signed the painting with his typical W monogram in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a busy arab street scene, with shops and buildings for overhanding upper storeys. There are two minarets in the centre background. The paper that the painting is mounted on, bears the embossed mark for Lehnert & Landrock, Cairo.
This is one of a pair of watercolours by this artist that we are listing.
EDWIN LORD WEEKS, 1849-1903, was born in Boston Massachusetts. He went to live in Paris with his wife, where he studied under Bonnat, although after some time he was offered a place to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Gerome, he turned it down and stayed with Bonnat. He is one of the most celebrated American Orientalists.
He travelled widely, going to Surinam, prior to moving to Paris. He later visited Spain, India, Lebanon, Persia, Morocco, Egypt, Syria and the Holy Land, to name but a few. He painted predominately in oils, but six sketchbooks of watercolours were sold in the United Arab Emirates in 2010, and this may be one of those.
He did exhibit in Britain, as follows. 2 paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy, 1 at the Royal Academy, 1 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and 1 at the Tooley Gallery. However, many of his exhibitions were in America and France. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club).
In 1896 he was made a Knight of the Legion d'Honneur. He died in Paris in 1903 from an illness believed to have been contracted in India.
A fuller biography may be found by looking on google, where a complete list of his works in oil may be found.
