Edwardian Wooden Cigarette Box with Glass Lid
Here we have a lovely Edwardian Cigarette Box with a bevelled glass lid and brass mounts. The box is made of oak with a cedar wood lining, which was the preferred wood to keep tobacco products fresh. This is a very high quality item that would have been a substantial purchase when it was produced.
There are two cedar wood dividers and three slots so that you have a choice of two equal compartments with a narrower central one, as in the photographs, or using a single divider to have two equal compartments or one large and one smaller.
There are brass mounts on each corner of the lid and a brass cartouche which is stylishly engraved with the word CIGARETTES. There is also a brass escutcheon plate over the keyhole. Sadly the key has gone missing at some point in the past.
Condition is good with just a couple of small chips to the wooden base at the back of the box, which have clearly been there for some considerable time. Both the wood and the brass have a lovely patina of age. The bevelled glass in the lid has no chips or cracks and just a very few small, superficial surface scratches. The thin leather cover on the underside of the base is quite worn but is obviously not visible during normal use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 22cm / 8.75" wide, 13.5cm / 5.4" deep and 7cm / 2.9" high.
This is a very distinctive and rather unusual cigarette box that could be used for storing any number of different items today.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
