Here we have a fine quality Victorian Oak desk made by the famous cabinet makers Gillows of Lancaster c1870. As you can see the desk has super colour and patina. There is a wonderful richly coloured gilded and tooled leather skiver to the top. The pedestals have rare wellington chest sets of drawers with a secret keyhole hidden behind a carved rose head. The key unlocks the reeded pilaster side which opens on a hinge so the drawers are released. There is the original key and working locks on both pilasters and the rear cupboards. As you would imagine being Gillows the quality of the timber and construction is breathtaking. The carefully selected timbers have been quarter sawn to show of the fine medullary rays found in English Oak. There are original handles to the drawer fronts which are Oak lined with dust bead quadrants internally and the trademark cut out screw slots in the rear of the bases to stop shrinkage splitting. The central drawer is stamped GILLOW and the code L1151. Also to the underside it is stamped with the cabinet makers name of S E Cornthwaite. The sides are solid Oak with fielded panels and the desk sits on plinth base with original casters underneath. A rare opportunity to obtain a fine quality desk from one of the worlds best cabinet makers. There is further provenance from the Gillows archives for the buyer. The dimensions are approx 54 inches wide 34 deep and 30 high.
