Correspondence to Christ's Hospital School
3 Letters to Richard Corp Esq.,of Christ's Hospital School, Newgate Street, London, referring to Land Tax payable on a piece of Land that the Hospital School Governors were purchasing. All the correspondence is dated 1810 and the 3 letters are from an Indigo James of the Land Tax Office, Parliament Street, London, John Wake of Pulham St. Mary, Norfolk and Mr Long of Stornfield, Saxmundham, Suffolk. The writing papers are Watermarked with dates 1806, 1807 and 1809. The 3 letters have been used as envelopes with Postal Franking of Saxmundham and Harlston. Plus Seals.
Christ's Hospital was Founded by King Edward VI, who was assisted by Nicholas Ridley, the Bishop of London and Sir Richard Dobbs, the Lord Mayor of London, to allow poor and disadvantaged children the opportunity of a boarding school education. The school was opened in 1552 and took both boys and girls.
In 1666 the Great Fire of London destroyed part of the Hospital, but by the end of the 17th Century the buildings had been re-built with the assistance of Sir Christopher Wren, who was a Governor of the Hospital. The school occupied Newgate for 350 years. Christ's Hospital School is now housed in West Sussex.
