Chronograph Fusee Pocket Watch, by J. Richardson
A heavy, premium quality “Centre Seconds Chronograph” silver fusee pocket watch, by internationally renowned manufacturer James Richardson, of Percy House, Holyhead Road, Coventry.
Born 20 Jan 1843 in Coventry, Richardson came from a large family and commenced his watchmaking apprentiship under Thomas Beech of Coventry on 5 May 1856, becoming a ‘Freeman of the City of Coventry’ in Dec 1863 on completion. He then went on to be one of the main watch manufacturers in Coventry, employing over 100 x men and women at his watchmaking factory in Holyhead Road. In 1894, the company was officially remained, becoming known as “J. Richardson & Son”, (the son being Charles James Richardson), and in early 1900, Richardson also opened a new London based sales and marketing office at 70 Hatton Garden, London, from where son Charles was then based.
Census records indicate that Ricardson lived at 6 x different addresses within Coventry during his life, (the last being Carlton House in Chester Street, from c1890, a large residential property in the leafy suburbs of the city). He had two children with his wife Susanna (daughter, Caroline Richardson, and as mentioned, a younger son Charles).
For such a worldly respected and successful manufacturer of high-quality timepieces, not a great deal is known about James Richardson, seemingly keeping himself to himself! However, it is known that he passed away at his home in Carlton House, Coventry, a wealthy man on 20 June 1901, at the relatively young age of 58 years old. Son Charles, continued to run the business from this point on, yet unfortunately, history tells us that Charles had become more of an irresponsible high-spending London socialite, than a responsible and serious businessman, and as a consequence, drove the company into liquidation in Feb 1904, (declaring himself personally bankrupt on 11 May 1904!)
Hallmarked Chester 1888, this watch has a fusee movement with the famous J. Richardson registered ‘Lion’ image trademark engraved onto the three-quarter plate. This, together with an engraved ‘Coventry Star Mark’, the endorsement of engineering quality.
(NB: For a number of years, Richardson’s firm held an exclusive and substantial prestige contract, to manufacturer and supply precision chronograph pocket watches to high-end and well-established London and Liverpool antique jewellery retailers ‘J. W. Reeley & Sons’. Each watch produced under this agreement (such as this fine example), also had Reeley & Sons details engraved onto the backplate…This contract would continue well into the 1920’s, and from July 1904, was taken over by Coventry watch manufacturers “Samuel Alexander & Son”, who had acquired the Richardson ‘Lion’ trademark, to use on their Reeley & Son produced chronographs).
The watch has gold hinges and gold start/stop slide button with white enamelled dial and blued main hands and sweep centre seconds’ hand. Roman hour numerals and 0-300 chronograph scale Arabic numerals. The movement has a bimetallic balance, and ruby end stone, and the case maker is also James Richardson “JR”. The case and movement serial numbers being the same, “66529.”
This fabulous and immensely collectable pocket watch comes delivered in a box with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time.
Note: This watch does not come with a chain or fob. If you require a silver chain/fob from our large stock, please contact us for advice.
